Hi, everyone. Welcome back. I know I normally share fashion tips with you, but today I’m writing to bring awareness to a disease I’m passionate about – arthritis. I played soccer for many years and after having surgery on my knee, I now struggle with pain from time to time. Sports injuries can often times lead to arthritis down the road, and given I still experience pain, it’s more than likely going to be a reality for me at some point. My personal experience made it easy for me to partner with The Arthritis Foundation to help spread awareness about this disease, which affects more than 54 Americans. That’s 1 in 4.

And you may think of arthritis as an “old-person” disease, but that’s just not the case. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65, including 300,000 children. And based on a recent Harris Poll survey that was funded by The Arthritis Foundation, 93% of Americans do not know that the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S. is arthritis. Think about it – odds are you know someone that suffers from arthritis so getting the word out about this disease is crucial in order to help make a difference and give those with arthritis hope of one day finding a cure.

To give me a first-hand look at what it’s like to have this disease, the Foundation sent me a pair of gloves that simulate what it’s like to have arthritis in my hands and it was pretty shocking. Check out my video below featuring the gloves.

I tried doing simple, everyday tasks associated with getting ready and looking my best like ironing my shit, doing my hair and even getting dressed was a struggle. The gloves restricted my hand movements and it took me so much longer to do everything. I can’t even imagine having pain as well, but that’s the reality for so many.

Lucky for me, I was able to take them off but that’s not the case for arthritis suffers. Many of them live in constant pain and can’t move their fingers freely due to the pain, inflammation and/or joint disfigurement caused by their arthritis. And the sad part is, there is no cure for arthritis.

To help fund research and ultimately find a cure, the Arthritis Foundation launched its first-ever cause campaign earlier this year called Let’s Get a Grip on Arthritis to help raise awareness and give those with arthritis hope that one day we’ll find a cure.

If you or someone you love has arthritis, join me in spreading the word and visit www.arthritis.org/LetsGripArthritis/ to learn more.  You also can show your support by posting on social of you doing something you love like working out or your favorite sport using the hashtag #LetsGripArthritis because people with arthritis can’t always do the things they love. And, if you are one that suffers from arthritis, check out these little tips and tricks about fashion, so you can continue to do what you love most while looking and feeling your best.
